About this trip

Spiti is Ladakh's quieter cousin, a cold desert valley of bare mountains, whitewashed monasteries, and villages that seem to hang off cliff edges. This short loop takes you from Shimla up through Kalpa and into the heart of the valley at Kaza, with stops at some of the highest villages and monasteries in the region.

Trip highlights

โœ“ Drive the dramatic Hindustan-Tibet Highway along the Sutlej and Spiti rivers
โœ“ Visit Key Monastery, perched on a hilltop above the Spiti river
โœ“ Explore Kibber and Langza, among the highest motorable villages in the world
โœ“ See the fossil-rich landscape and the giant Buddha statue at Langza
โœ“ Stargaze from Kaza with almost zero light pollution

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Shimla to Kalpa

Drive out along the Hindustan-Tibet Highway, following the Sutlej river up into the mountains. Arrive in Kalpa by evening for views across to the Kinnaur Kailash range.

2

Kalpa to Kaza

Continue deeper into the valley, crossing into cold-desert terrain as the landscape turns from green to bare rock. Settle into Kaza, the valley's main town, by evening.

3

Key Monastery, Kibber and Langza

Visit Key Monastery, then continue on to Kibber and the fossil village of Langza, home to a giant Buddha statue looking out over the valley. Return to Kaza for the night.

4

Chandratal (weather permitting) or Pin Valley

Depending on road and weather conditions, either drive up to the moon-shaped Chandratal lake or explore the Pin Valley's villages and monasteries. Final night in Kaza.

5

Kaza to Shimla / onward journey

Begin the journey back, carrying with you a very different picture of the Himalayas than most people ever see.
