Bangalore โ†’ Coorg Road Trip Guide

Distance: ~260 km one-way
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Fuel Cost: โ‚น1,800-2,000 one-way

Coorg is one of the easiest hill escapes from Bangalore: a manageable single-day drive there and back if needed, though it deserves at least a weekend.

The route

Bangalore โ†’ Mysuru โ†’ Kushalnagar โ†’ Madikeri, mostly on NH275 before switching to the state highway through Kushalnagar into the Coorg hills.

Fuel cost

Budget around โ‚น1,800 to โ‚น2,000 one-way for a hatchback or sedan, based on roughly 14 km/l over 260 km of mixed expressway and hill roads.

Road conditions

NH275 from Bangalore to Mysuru is a well-maintained expressway. The stretch from Mysuru through Kushalnagar to Madikeri is a decent state highway that gets progressively narrower and more winding as you climb into the hills. Early-morning fog is common from July to September, so drive a little slower in that window.

Food stops

  • โ€ขMaddur for the famous Maddur vada, a classic breakfast stop
  • โ€ขMysuru for lunch, a good spot for a proper Mysuru-style dosa
  • โ€ขKushalnagar for coffee and snacks before the final climb into Coorg

Scenic viewpoints

  • โ€ขRanganathittu Bird Sanctuary, a short detour near Mysuru
  • โ€ขNamdroling Monastery (the Golden Temple) in Kushalnagar
  • โ€ขAbbey Falls near Madikeri
  • โ€ขRaja's Seat in Madikeri for sunset
  • โ€ขMandalpatti viewpoint, reachable by jeep for the last stretch

Hotel suggestions

Coffee estate homestays around Madikeri and Kushalnagar are the standout option and the reason most people come back, though they book out fast on weekends. Madikeri town has more budget guesthouse options, and stays near Dubare are convenient if an elephant camp visit is on your list.
