Mumbai โ†’ Goa Road Trip Guide

Distance: ~590 km one-way
Driving Time: 10-11 hours
Fuel Cost: โ‚น3,800-4,200 one-way

The Mumbai to Goa drive down NH66 has improved a lot over the last few years, and it makes for one of the best coastal road trips in the country if you spread it across two days.

The route

Mumbai โ†’ Panvel โ†’ Mahad โ†’ Chiplun โ†’ Ratnagiri โ†’ Kankavli โ†’ Goa, almost entirely on NH66. A halfway stop around Ganpatipule or Tarkarli turns the drive into a proper two-day trip rather than one long slog.

Fuel cost

Expect around โ‚น3,800 to โ‚น4,200 one-way, based on roughly 15 km/l over 590 km of highway driving. Factor in toll charges as well; there are several toll plazas along NH66.

Road conditions

NH66 is largely in good condition now, with the Kashedi Ghat tunnel easing what used to be one of the worst bottlenecks on the route. Some coastal ghat sections around Mahad-Chiplun can still see slow traffic, and landslide risk goes up in the monsoon months from June to September.

Food stops

  • โ€ขKhed or Mangaon for an early breakfast stop
  • โ€ขGanpatipule or Ratnagiri for a Malvani thali and fresh seafood
  • โ€ขDevgad for Alphonso mangoes if you are driving through in season
  • โ€ขVengurla for coastal shacks just before crossing into Goa

Scenic viewpoints

  • โ€ขDiveagar and Harihareshwar, a worthwhile coastal detour early in the drive
  • โ€ขGanpatipule beach and temple
  • โ€ขTarkarli backwaters
  • โ€ขAmboli Ghat waterfalls, a monsoon-season detour
  • โ€ขArambol cliffside sunset once you cross into Goa

Hotel suggestions

A beach resort in Ganpatipule or Tarkarli makes a good halfway overnight break, or a budget homestay in Malvan if you want a coastal detour night. In Goa itself, Anjuna and Vagator suit a backpacker-crew vibe, while Palolem in the south is quieter if that is more your crew's pace.
