Delhi → Agra Weekend Escape

← WEEKEND ESCAPE SERIES
Distance: ~230 km one-way
Drive Time: 3-3.5 hours
Fuel Cost: ₹1,500-1,800 one-way + tolls
Best Time: October-March

Most people do Agra as a rushed day trip. Stay the night instead and you get the Taj at sunrise, which is quieter and better lit, plus time for the other Mughal monuments that day-trippers usually skip.

Getting there

The Yamuna Expressway from Greater Noida to Agra is fast, straight, and well maintained. Budget for tolls on top of fuel. By train, the Gatimaan Express and Vande Bharat take under two hours from Hazrat Nizamuddin, so going car-free is easy.

Day 1: Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh

  • •Arrive by late morning and explore Agra Fort, a UNESCO site in its own right
  • •Visit Itimad-ud-Daulah, nicknamed the Baby Taj, for its delicate inlay work
  • •Watch the sunset from Mehtab Bagh across the Yamuna, with the Taj straight ahead
  • •Dinner around Sadar Bazaar

Day 2: Taj Mahal at sunrise and Fatehpur Sikri

  • •Be at the gate before sunrise. It opens about 30 minutes before.
  • •Spend two hours at the Taj, including the main mausoleum (separate ticket)
  • •Bedai and jalebi breakfast in the old city
  • •Drive about 40 km to Fatehpur Sikri for the Buland Darwaza and Jama Masjid, then head home

Where to stay

Stay in Taj Ganj, within walking distance of the East Gate, so the sunrise start is easy. It has everything from backpacker hostels with rooftop Taj views to luxury hotels. Fatehabad Road has more mid-range chain hotels.

What to eat

  • •Bedai with aloo sabzi and jalebi, the classic Agra breakfast
  • •Petha in every flavour, best bought from the well-known shops in the old city
  • •Mughlai dinners around Sadar Bazaar
  • •Rooftop cafés in Taj Ganj for a Taj view with your meal

Good to know

  • •The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Plan around it.
  • •Book Taj tickets online in advance. Only small bags are allowed, and food, tripods, and drones are not.
  • •Night viewing runs on full-moon nights and two nights either side, except Fridays and during Ramzan. Tickets are limited and need advance booking.
  • •Winter fog from December to January can hide the Taj at sunrise and slow the expressway
