Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best bird sanctuaries in Asia, and it is under four hours from Delhi. In winter the wetlands fill up with migratory birds, and the whole park is best explored slowly by bicycle or cycle rickshaw.
Delhi → Faridabad → Palwal → Mathura → Bharatpur on NH19, then NH21 for the last stretch. Alternatively, take the Yamuna Expressway to Mathura and cut across. Several trains from Delhi stop at Bharatpur Junction in about 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
Most stays sit on the road near the park gate, which makes early starts easy. There are heritage properties and small lodges run by birding families, many of which can arrange guides. Bharatpur town itself has simpler budget options.
Bharatpur is about 185 km from Delhi, a 3.5 to 4 hour drive via NH19 through Mathura. Trains take around 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
November to February, when migratory birds fill the wetlands.
No. Private vehicles are not allowed inside. You can walk, rent a bicycle, or hire a licensed cycle rickshaw.
Siberian cranes have not been recorded at Keoladeo in many years, but the park still hosts painted storks, sarus cranes, pelicans, bar-headed geese, and many raptors.
Lohagarh Fort in Bharatpur town, Deeg Palace about 35 km away, and Fatehpur Sikri about 20 km away.
